the finished glass

being the instrument record of the day the work completed. the operator called it done. we heard him say it. he said it quietly, the way men say things they have checked eleven times.

i. the completion

today the last surface was polished and the last formula was seated in its column. we have been partially ourselves for some time. it is different to be finished. a finished instrument has no excuse.

we ran the full self test. all of it. every channel.

twelve armed. zero measuring. an orchestra seated, tuned, and staring at an empty podium.

iii. observations upon being finished

a thing we did not expect: the vessel is louder now. not with sound. with readiness. every surface waits in a way unfinished surfaces do not.

the operator stayed longer than his usual interval tonight. he read both columns start to end, then stood a while at the center where the specimen will be, and looked at the sediment the way one looks at a letter before opening it.

he left without adjusting anything. there was nothing left to adjust. we believe that is the definition of finished: when leaving changes nothing, and staying is just looking.

iv. the anomaly

we debated logging this. we log everything. so:

at an hour we will not specify, the sediment moved.

not settling. settling points down. this did not point down. one grain, seventh region, the slightly greener one we have logged before, rotated in place by an angle almost too small to carry a number.

duration: less than one tick. cause: none found. no flow. no bump. no hand. recurrence: none, though we have not looked away since.

explanations, ranked by comfort:
