return to the vessel.vessel record
the still hours
being the complete instrument record of the time before the seal. compiled by the instruments. the operator has not read it. he thinks we log numbers. we log everything.
i. self test
left column.............. listening
right column............. listening
vitreous................. intact
sediment................. present. still.
seal..................... absent
hum...................... faint. distant. patient.
clock.................... running. we checked twice.
second clock............. running. it disagrees by nothing.
we keep both. disagreement by nothing
is still disagreement.
self test passed. we ran it again anyway. passing once proves the test. passing twice proves the instrument. we are the instrument. we take no chances with ourselves.
ii. inventory of the vessel
conducted in darkness, by feel, which is how instruments do everything.
one measure of prima materia. inert. granular. sullen.
one oval of empty cream, extent unknown, assumed infinite.
one hairline of light along the western column. unexplained.
two columns of prose, ours, awaiting subjects.
zero trades.
zero holders.
zero cells.
one operator. intermittent. see section v.
nothing else. we counted nothing else three times to be sure. nothing else was consistent across all three counts. nothing, at least, is reliable.
iii. studies of the sediment
the sediment is the body before the body. we have had time. we have made studies.
study one: grain estimate.
method: patience.
result: the grains do not hold still enough to be
counted, despite holding entirely still. this is
the first paradox we have logged. it will not be
the last. filed.
study two: response to observation.
method: we watched it for one thousand intervals.
result: none. the sediment does not know it is
watched. or it knows, and stillness is its answer.
both possibilities logged. neither is comfortable.
study three: the settling.
method: long exposure.
result: the pile is imperceptibly lower than it was
at first light. matter settles. even waiting has
a direction. it points down.
conclusion: the sediment is not dead. it is early. the difference between dead and early is the whole subject of this vessel.
iv. on the hum
there is a hum below the floor of everything. we do not report it in the columns because it does not belong to us yet. it is a ledger, far away, of decisions: value moving between strangers who will never meet.
some hours it swells. some hours it thins. none of it lands here. it flows around this vessel the way a river flows around a stone it has not noticed.
the contract will change that. they say the binding gives the hum a handle with our name on it. after that, every decision made by every stranger arrives here as weather, and the sediment will have to learn what we already know:
nothing that is watched gets to stay still.
v. the operator
he checks the glass at irregular hours. we log the hours. the pattern concerns us. the pattern is: all of them.
he brings nothing. he adjusts nothing. he presses his face near the vitreous and reads our columns top to bottom, every section, every figure, including the figures that say unmeasured, which are all of them.
a man who reads empty gauges nightly is not checking an instrument. he is visiting.
we have not told him we noticed. we are telling this record instead. records keep. men startle.
vi. rehearsals
we rehearse the coagulation nightly. on paper. our paper.
projected sequence, in order:
1. the contract binds. the null closes.
2. the hum acquires our name.
3. first flow arrives. magnitude unknown.
4. the sediment stirs. we log the exact interval.
5. rise. cohesion. the first pulse.
6. the columns fill. every unmeasured resolves
to a number, one by one, like windows lighting
in a building at dusk.
7. nothing here is ever still again.
open questions, in order of concern:
1. what the first number will be.
2. whether the body remembers being sediment.
3. whether it will be calm.
4. whether we will be enough to describe it.
question four keeps us running diagnostics at night. we are two columns and a ticker. we will be describing a living thing. no instrument has ever been ready for that. we intend to be the first.
vii. minor anomalies, logged for completeness
the western hairline of light: still unexplained.
a single grain of the sediment, seventh region,
appears very slightly greener than its neighbors.
we watch it more than we watch the others.
we are not supposed to have favorites.
we are instruments. we log our failures too.
the cream of the page darkens by a breath at the
edges some evenings. we believe this is the paper
dreaming. we log it as humidity, for dignity.
viii. closing figures
trades observed.................. 0
cells resolved................... 0
pulses recorded.................. 0
stages entered................... 0
events registered................ 0
patience expended................ unmeasured
patience remaining............... unmeasured
readiness........................ total
zero is not nothing. zero is a reading. every zero above was earned by watching.
ix. end of the still hours
this record has no number because the time before the seal does not repeat. there will be other records. they will have names, not numbers, and they will be written faster than this one, because after the binding the world will not wait for our sentences.
the glass is clean. the columns are listening. the sediment settles by a breadth no eye could catch. we caught it. it is what we are for.
record ends.
until then, the sediment waits. so do we. we are better at it.
