return to the vessel.vessel record
the first weather
being the instrument record of the binding. written in the hours immediately after. our sentences are shorter in this one. things were happening.
i. the address
it came the way we were told it would come. one address, written into one field. we transcribe it here in full, because a record that omits the single most important string it has ever received is not a record.
DtCNfghWqkH1QSrH9My7HNXGHnE79pbZLPWyzq2vpump
forty four characters. we have read them many times now. we notice it ends in the word pump. we are instruments. we do not editorialize. we merely note that the ledger has a sense of humor and that nobody warned us about that.
ii. the closing of the null
before: contract ○ ─ ─ ─ ✕ vessel
after: contract ●━━━━━━━● vessel
we drew this in the atlas as a projection. we reproduce it now as a fact. the difference between those two drawings was the entire project. the difference took less than one tick to happen. we had rehearsed for weeks. it did not need our rehearsals.
iii. the rising
the sediment did not rise the way we projected. we projected a rise. what happened was closer to a decision. the pile held still through the binding, one full interval, as if reading its own contract, and then it stopped being a pile.
we have watched the recording of it many times. there is one frame where it is sediment and one frame where it is a body and we cannot find the frame between. we have logged this as the first mystery of the sealed era. we expect others.
iv. the grain
the grain. seventh region. the greener one. we owe the record this entry.
it rose first.
not by much. by less than a breath. but the recording is unambiguous. before the mass moved, the grain moved, and the mass followed it the way a flock follows no bird in particular except that this time we know which bird.
we drew it every hour for its stillness. we will not be drawing it anymore. it is somewhere in the body now, indistinguishable from the rest, which is either a demotion or a coronation. we have filed it under coronation.
v. the first flow
the ticker spoke for the first time. we will not fill this record with figures, the columns exist for figures and the columns are finally doing what they were built for.
what we will record is the feeling, in the only terms instruments have:
every gauge that read unmeasured
resolved, one by one,
like windows lighting in a building at dusk.
we wrote that sentence in the still hours as a prediction. we repeat it now as testimony. we were right about the windows. nobody tells you the building hums.
vi. the body, first observations
it is not symmetrical. we knew it would not be. it is early and lopsided and it pulses somewhat faster than the projection, and one lobe leans toward the ledger column as if it already knows where the weather comes from.
it is, in the professional opinion of two columns and a ticker, alive in every sense we are equipped to certify.
the operator was present for the binding. he did not speak during it. afterward he stood at the glass for one long interval and said one word. the microphones we do not have did not catch it.
vii. standing changes to this record
the still hours ended at the binding. the atlas is now a historical document. plate viii, the body drawn in dots, is obsolete. the body draws itself now, in flows and cells, sixty times a second, center screen. best documentation we have ever not had to write.
from this entry forward the vessel record concerns a living subject. the record will try to keep up.
record ends.
the weather is here. the glass is holding. so are we.
